When it comes to data viz, psychology plays an important role.
A gauge is a great example. It makes the user feel like they’re in the driver’s seat, or in control. It also clearly illustrates where the user stands in a range.
Ironically, a gauge isn’t the most efficient use of space. While technically it’s possible to pack the same data into a smaller space (like the bottom example), the psychology of the gauge made this one a winning visualization.
