The essential skill

One problem with UX is that it is getting very fragmented.

People are specializing on one part of the process, be it PM, research, IA, visual, interaction, content, etc. The upside is these practitioners have more specialized skills that go deeper than what most generalists can do. The downside is that it relies on communication in order to maintain a holistic perspective. I’ve found that’s a lot to ask, especially in our post-pandemic fog.

So the essential skill for the specialist is over-communicating. The best communicators will rise to strategic levels and hold the vision together for the team, the product and the user. It’s true for everyone, but particularly the specialist.
